Place of protection

COMPILED BY ROHINI RAMAKRISHNAN

The tiny Pacific island nation of Kiribati was declared the world’s largest marine protected area recently. It includes pristine reefs and eight coral atolls teeming with fish and birds. The Phoenix Islands Protected Area, or PIPA, lies about h alfway between Hawaii and Fiji. PIPA was the world’s third largest marine protected area when it was first designated two years ago. The Kiribati government has now dramatically expanded the size of the reserve-more than doubling the area-making it the world’s largest. The reserve conserves one of Earth’s last intact oceanic coral archipelago ecosystems.
