Tribute to folk art

S.S.KAVITHA

Music and dance marked the celebrations.

Celebration: Through dance

Religious fervour pervaded the Gandhi Museum when M. Suresh Rajan and M. Marimuthu, got on the stage to perform the Shiva-Kali Dance. They brought the roof down with their folksy tunes. Suresh Rajan and Marimuthu, who are pursuing plus-two from a private tuition centre and at Ilango Corporation Higher Secondary School, were able to join hands at the Vanmukil Kalai Vizha, a function organised by Madurai Seed, a city-based non-governmental organisation working with children.

Fun day

The whole day children worked with various forms of folk forms. The children and youth in the age group of five to 20 who were part of the Kalai Kuzhu of the NGO organised the Vizha to exhibit their knowledge on folk dance forms besides celebrating the institution day and ninth anniversary of the NGO.

The children also staged mimicry programmes besides dancing to western tunes.

The aim of the programme was to create awareness on various folk art forms that are being neglected for various reasons, said A.S.Karthik Bharathi, managing trustee, Madurai Seed. “The programme was organised by children for children under the guidance of youth,” he said and added that they had themselves compered the programme with appropriate details and introduction to every dance form that was staged by the students.
