Anti Rabies drive: Health for all.
Summer is round the corner and at such times incidence of rabies is usually high. Pelting stones at street dogs is a strict no-no. It was a health campaign with a difference. The Samarakshna Animal Welfare Society (SAWA), as a part of its annual activities, castrated and spayed 40 stray dogs at Nachikurichi Panchayat.
The dogs were also administered anti-rabies vaccine. A team of veterinarians, headed by Jothiraj, from Tiruchi-based International Animal Rescue and a vet team working under the sponsorship of Samrakshna Society, carried out the surgery and immunisation programme.
Good care
The dogs were under post-operative care for a few days and were moved to their respective areas.
The vice-presidents of the society, Correspondent of Sivananda Balalaya K. G. Meenakshi and V. Ganapathy, and the advisor of the society, M. Babu, coordinated the programme.
Animal birth control programmes and anti-rabies campaign would be extended to more areas, Ms. Meenakshi said. Animal Welfare Board of India has granted Rs. 40,000 to the Society for anti-rabies programme. Under the grant, the society has planned to reduce the population of canines and immunise the existing ones at various areas in and around the district.
