At Anchorage, Alaska: Reindeer race.
Reindeer are usually the star attraction in meals in Alaska. But this time they were stars of a show that had nothing to do with the pot. Anchorage hosted the first annual running of the reindeer, supposed to be Alaska’s version of Spain’s running of the bulls. Cheering crowds gathered on Fourth Avenue despite the snow as the reindeer were lined up behind the first lot of runners. Many were in costume; some were dressed as carrots and lichen (reindeer food). Mark Berg, who has lived in Alaska since 1967, told AP, "Normally we just eat them. I’ve eaten more of their cousins than they want to know." Once the signal was given, the reindeer ran into the crowd and were well ahead of the runners by halfway point. "We thought, ’OK, they’re just going to mosey along,’ but they took off running," Amanda Pelkola, who dressed as a carrot with a friend, told AP. "We got smoked by the reindeer."
