Longing for the sea

Alison: An Atlantic green sea turtle.

Alison is a five-inch green sea turtle. When she was found, she was missing three of her flippers and had little chance of survival. But thanks to prompt treatment from an animal shelter, she survived and swims around with just one flipper. Her caregivers at Sea Turtle Inc. are now hoping to fit her with a prosthetic flipper. Sea turtles can grow to 450 pounds and live for around 100 years; so Alison’s prognosis was not very encouraging. With one just flipper, she would be confined to shallow waters for the rest of her life. The prosthetic will be from the kind of silicon used for human implants and it will be tested in sea water to ensure that it does not dissolve. A team of doctors from University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Centre and UT Dental Branch have volunteered to help Alison get back to the sea.
