True to its tagline "Opening doors, Creating opportunities", the International English anguage Testing System (IELTS) is being recognised more and more by immigration authorities and government departments in most English-speaking countries all over the world. It is a test trusted for its reliability in determining the English language proficiency of the test-takers in all the four aspects: listening, reading, writing and speaking. Whether for pursuing higher education in an English-speaking country or for the purpose of taking up a job, the test scores are recognised for their authenticity. It is also one of the most frequently administered tests with over 7,00,000 people taking it every year.
No wonder then that many of
the candidates with varying abilities
are always looking out for
some help in improving their performance
level in this all-important
test of their lives.
This is where the Achieve IELTS
1 and 2 for the Intermediate-Upper
Intermediate level and for the
Upper-Intermediate-Advanced
level fill the slot. For each of these
levels there is a Students 'Book and
a Workbook. The authors are
Louis Harrison, a teacher at the
University of Bradford conducting
preparation courses for IELTS,
Caroline Cushen, an IELTS examiner and Susan Hutchinson,
teacher-trainer and examiner who
served the British Council before
joining the international school in
Moscow. All three have had to vent
their erudition in presenting such
well-thought out "student-centred
communicative approach to learning".
User friendly
Each of the books comes with
audio CDs - for practice in listening.
The Students' Book and the
Workbook are divided into units
and every unit has user-friendly
exercises in all four components
which closely follow the test format.
The materials chosen are upto-
date and cover cross-cultural
information so that students get a
taste of what they might expect in
any modern-day university. The
comprehension passages are as
varied as life itself. The speakers
feature voices from different countries.
The audio scripts of the listening
exercises and their answer
keys are included.
"The Map of the Book" lists out
the language study that a student is
exposed to in each of the units. It
also indicates clearly what study
skills have been covered. Practice
in pronunciation, in answering
pointed questions based on a discussion/lecture, in learning the social
niceties and in recalling facts
and figures are all there. The books
have plenty of variety and are definitely
pro-active.
The production is neat, the
printing without any clutter. There are plenty of illustrations in
colour and the paper quality is excellent.
Certainly a useful set of
books not only for the IELTS exam
aspirants but also for those looking
forward to a better academic life after the IELTS.
