Learning the culture and tradition of different countries is enjoyable. That is what happened to 32 students of Hong Kah Secondary School, Singapore, who came to Madurai on a week-long visit to the Department of Home Science of Fatima College.
The students who were in the age group of 14 to 15 began their day of learning with the session on “sari and dhoti wearing” that was followed by fashion studio demonstration that enabled them to have hands-on experience on the dressing aspects of Tamilians.
The students also learnt about the traditional south and north Indian cooking, arts and crafts and quantitative and qualitative tests for food ingredients. They also designed apparel with the aid of fashion studio software.
The students were taken on a city tour in which they visited Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple and Gandhi Museum. They also visited schools and educational institutions.
Way to study
Nazeema, a student of Home Economics, who is on her second visit to Madurai, said that she enjoyed the process of learning. She said in Singapore students were allowed to work and study in groups which help them learn better, and also de-stress.
Vasanthi Devi, co-ordinator of the programme of Hong Kah Secondary School, said that the Singapore Government had been organising similar exchange programmes to give globalised knowledge to students, who in turn would contribute the same to the country’s development.
Quek-Chang, head, Home Economics, said that the main objective of the Star Twinning Programme was to forge partnership ties and collaboration with the college in the area of home economics and hospitality.
The Department of Home Science of Fatima College signed a memorandum of understanding with Hong Kah Secondary School in 2006. In the same year a group of Singapore students visited the college and in 2007 students of Fatima College visited Singapore. In continuation of the three-year programme, a group of 32 students and four faculty members visited the college this year, said Vasantha Esther Rani, Head, Department of Home Science, Fatima College.
