Power in your hands

M. BALAGANESSIN

A mobile phone that switches off electric supply….

Individual talent: Sabarivasan honoured.

An exhibit using an extended application of mobile phone for switching off the domestic power main lines got him the second prize for individual talent at the Southern Science Exhibition organised by the Vishveswaraya Industrial and Technological Museum, Bangalore, and the Tamil Nadu Directorate of School Education.

Useful application

The exhibit prepared by C. Sabarivasan, a student of Std. IX of Government Higher Secondary School in Tirugokarnam in Pudukottai town, applied the scientific principle of using the mobile phone to switch off the power lines. It will be useful especially for those who leave their homes on a trip.

A mobile phone is fitted with the main-box of the domestic circuit. A call made to this mobile phone from outside automatically switches off the supply of power to the electrical circuit. The student was guided by science teacher S. Babu. Sabarivasan’s model was initially selected at the district level inter-school exhibition and later at the State level exhibition, which enabled him to participate at the Southern Science Exhibition.

A large number of models on innovative scientific themes made by the school students, individually or in groups, from the States of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and the Union Territory of Puducherry were displayed at the expo.

A function was held at the school in which both the student and the teacher were felicitated for bringing laurels to the institute.

The headmaster of the school, R. Adikkan, presented a memento to Sabarivasan and appreciated his endeavour in using the principles of mobile phone as a means for crisis management during an emergency.

A. John Kennedy, village panchayat president, 9A Natham Pannai village, gave the student Rs.1,000.

T. Periyasamy, Chief Educational Officer, Sarva Siksha Abhiyan, and Thangam Moorthy, correspondent, Venkateswara Matric H.S. School, were among those who commended the boy’s efforts.
