Thank you readers...
We were overwhelmed by your responses and amazed at the imagination and the variations that the stories took. Due to lack of space we are not able to publish all the entries we received, but we have chosen a few. We had begun three stories:
a. The path was narrow and winding. But the wild flowers that grew on the sides made it look almost beautiful…
b. The storm had passed and the sea was blue and calm…
c. School was over and the summer vacation had just begun. Sheetal and Arjun wondered what they would do…
Perfect retreat
The path was narrow and winding. But the wild flowers that grew on the sides made it look almost beautiful. The sun was setting in its full glory, reminding me of the upcoming darkness. The past months had taken a toll on my health and made me a zombie. I was heading towards a retreat amidst this perfect setting. As I stepped backwards, I fell into a fathomless valley. Opening my eyes I found myself in a tribal village. The police f
ound me two months later. I learnt the meaning of life and happiness.

Operation ‘Clean-up’
School was over and the summer vacation had just begun. Sheetal and Arjun wondered what they would do in the blistering heat. This time, they wanted to do something different. So, they thought of cleaning up their colony. They told their friends and they agreed. The next day “Operation Cleanliness” began. Within a few days the locality started looking really clean. The elders appreciated the great job.

Peace and quiet
The path was narrow and winding. But the wild flowers that grew on the sides made it look almost beautiful. Leah was enjoying her morning walk. She feasted her eyes on the flowers, and breathed in the cool, fresh morning air. She reached her house. Even though it was in the city, her house was protected from the dust and grime because it had a garden with tall trees. Also, her house faced the backwaters.
She removed her shoes and walked barefoot on the grass to enjoy the morning dew. Then, regretfully, she went inside to get ready for school. The garden was her best friend, her comfort, her solace.
That morning when she had started on her morning walk, her parents seemed rather tense. But recently, they were always tense. Her parents looked worried when they saw her.
“We have something to tell you,” her father announced solemnly.
She didn’t want to hear it.
That day in the school bus, Leah did nothing to stop her tears. What her parents had told her had devastated her. Her house was to be pulled down so that an apartment block could come up.

Time for the garden
The path was narrow and winding. But the wild flowers that grew on the sides made it look almost beautiful. The reason none of us had bothered to clear out the garden and grow better and more beautiful flowers was that we did not have enough money or even the necessary and adequate tools. Another important reason was that none of us had the time to clear up the winding stone-paved path leading from the door of our house to the far end of the garden (we did not have an appr
opriate gate). Our Ma and Pa worked hard all day long. And we too did small jobs after school hours.
But now it was the summer holidays and we were able to do what we pleased in the evenings. My siblings preferred to go out into the garden and play some silly games but I, being the youngest was not included. I preferred to do something I enjoyed doing most during the summer — planting my own trees and flower garden. I had seen many people on the streets and taking out rallies and chanting slogans like “Save our earth”, “Plant trees”, and “Save water”. I took it seriously and spent my time planting trees and flowers.

Off to a camp
School was over, the summer vacation had just begun. Sheetal and Arjun wondered what they would do in their holidays. That is when Ram, one of their friends came up with an idea. He said, “Maybe the three of us can attend a camp that is being held at the Dhanvantari temple in Coimbatore?”
The very next day the three of them left for the camp. At the end of the month they were very satisfied that they had spent their vacation in a very useful manner.

Nature’s games
The storm had passed and the sea was blue and calm. It was a calm evening and the breeze was pleasant. Then suddenly I heard loud claps of thunder and there was lightning. I thought it was about to rain but then something strange happened. There came a dense cloud of dust. Then just as suddenly the storm passed. But strangely soon after there was a hail storm. And then once again everything cleared up and the sea was blue and it was a pleasant evening.

My path of dreams
The path was narrow and winding but the flowers on the side made it look almost beautiful. They asked me to bury my dreams and walk on the path which would lead me to materialistic success. I knew this path was easier with its beautiful scenery and eternal sunshine. But my heart would always carry a regret of quitting on my dreams.
And so, I began — the heat was unbearable and the soles of my feet eventually wore away. I looked upon the dry bushes… they didn’t move me as in my heart I knew that the unaccountable flowers of my dreams blossomed everywhere.
I worked hard and I won. I realised the path which appears like poison in the beginning tastes like nectar in the end.
