Learning and leadership: The benefits of reading are enormous.
With the monsoon, the schools have reopened. The classes are in full swing. On June 20 ‘Reading Day’ has passed by reminding us once more of the importance of reading.
Why should we read?
It is said that people who read are people who lead. All that mankind has done thought, gained or been, is magic preserved in books. Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.
All of us agree that speaking and writing are active processes. But we fail to understand that listening and reading are also equally important. Read your textbooks, newspapers, magazines, stories, and novels. Yes, read all that enriches your knowledge.
To be an active reader, you must increase your vocabulary. The more words you know the better and quicker is your understanding. As you read, ask yourself questions like, ‘What have I understood?’ ‘What does the author say?’ ‘What does this mean?’
Share your thoughts with others. Talk about what is read. Be critical when you read. this will help you to digest what you have read. But remember, read not to contradict or refute none to believe and take for granted; nor to find talk and discourse, but weigh and consider. Read aloud when you are in the lower classes but learn to read silently as you grow up.
Improve your reading
There are two basic methods to improve your reading. One is training your eyes and the other is training your mind. Players like Pele or Sachin Tendulkar are able to see at a glance the whole playground and the players in front of them. The same thing holds good in reading. You should be able to see as many words you can grasp at a glance. Increasing your eyes’ span helps you to see more words with one glance. If you are asked to take as many sweets you can from a tin, you try to stretch your hand to grasp or collect the maximum number of sweets. In the same way develop a greedy eye to read more at a glance.
When we were small we were taught to read word by word. This is like walking step by step. But as you grow you have to read phrase by phrase or sentence by sentence. This is fast reading.
Train your mind to comprehend matter as quickly as possible. If you want to be a good leader, you have to be a good reader.
Start now. Wish you all happy reading during this academic year!
