Living it up: On the rink
Good news is round the corner for children in Mangalore as now they can have a standard rink finally thanks to the demands of skating enthusiasts. Previously children have been skating on the road or on the small rink at Mangala Stadium.
Sharanaya Mahesh (15), now in Canara College and Mayur S. Kumar of St. Theresa High School who are national champions, Ajay Upadyaya (13) and Parjanaya Tallur (13), both of MRPL School, who have represented the State at the national level have won championships and medals without a proper place to practise. But this was no hurdle for them.
The Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (MESCOM) has donated Rs. 12 lakh for the rink proposed by the district administration, so now there is hope that the rink will be a reality. The Deputy Director of Horticulture (Zilla Panchayat) C.J. Nagaraj said that the rink will be ready in three months. There is no going back this time, he said.
Skating coach Mahesh Kumar, who has been fighting for the facility for the last 17 years and been a coach for all those who have won national medals, said the rink will give a boost to the skating talent. He hoped that there will be no more delay in implementing the project. Though cities such as Chickmagalur had big skating rinks they were yet to produce talented skaters who can participate at national level, he pointed out.
The skating rink will come up next to the MRPL Petrol Bunk across the national highway near the Kadri Park.
