Silver medalist: Nikhat Bano
Six years back when a kid took to playing table tennis people could hardly foresee a promising player of the game in the making. Yes, Nikhat Bano, the Std. X student of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Picket, who has been the reigning State champion and a noted national player in the junior category, has many dreams to realise. She clinched the national Under-12 title at Chennai for the year 2004-05. And now she joins the big league-the Asian Junior Table Tennis Championship in Pakist
an. It is not the first time that she is playing in the international arena. Earlier, Nikhat has also participated in Junior Circuit Championship, China, helping her team to win the silver medal. “Prior to that we had to take part in 25 days rigorous camping session and it was a great learning experience”, she adds. She feels her ‘Sirs’ Venugopal and Nagaraj are behind her progress.
Disappointment
Her playing ambition received an unexpected jolt when she could not make for the Youth Commonwealth Event. “It was earlier scheduled to be in China where an eight member squad would have represented India, but due to the earthquake the venue was shifted to the U.S. where only a five-member team was allowed to go. Sponsorship and limited budget is the greatest difficulty we come across,” reflects Nikhat.
Nikhat, like every other student, is concerned about her board performance. She managed to secure moderately well (77 per cent) in her previous class and hopes to do better this year. This extends to her game as well, as she hopes to add another title to her success story soon!
