Study of sorts

SURESH KUMAR

This certificate course focuses on individual development, and requires a constant feedback.

A session: Personal enhancement.

The class consists of participants from various echelons of society. It has students, parents like teachers, housewives, advocates, social workers, engineers, businesspersons, journalists, priests and even magicians. A “Counselling and Personality development certificate course” in which teachers, parents and children sit together and listen seems unique. While the minimum age of the participant in this course is 17, the senior citizen in this group is aged 65. The 10-month durable course started at Santhwana Institute of Counselling and Psychotherapy, Kochi, has about 75 participants in which 15 are students studying in higher secondary classes.

Topics

The topics covered in this certificate course are counselling, personality development, transactional analysis, communication skills, stress management, relaxation programme, teen-age depression, anxiety, anger management, time management, psychotic disorders, self-awareness, neuro linguistic programme and effective parenting. “These topics cannot be taught in a single day or week. It is a continuous study and needs constant feedback and appraisal. The participants themselves have to be aware of their strength and weaknesses after each class,” says Fr. Dr. Varghese Pudussery, Director of the institute. Conducted every Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m., the course module consists of 30 sessions from July-April every year. The course fee is Rs. 1,000. ‘Since it has been a continuing course, those who miss the earlier classes can make up the loss by carrying over to the next year classes, said Fr. Dr. Varghese Pudussery. Started in 1990, “Santhwana” offers courses on students’ learning disorders, support centre for children facing academic difficulties, remedial teaching etc. It can be contacted at 0484-2352961, mobile-9388604213 and on web www.santhwana.tripod.com, www.santhwana.net and e-mail vpudussery@rediffmail.com
