Celebrate the joys of learning

S. AISHWARYA

The college students got the kids together and taught them many activities.

Innocent plea: Children at the prayer session.

In the middle of their academic marathon of this year, the students of Gandhi Nursery and Primary School had a fun-filled learning experience for a whole week.

The students of Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College donned the mantle of teachers on their recent visit to the school.

For the final-year students of Department of Home Science, the week-long teaching experience proved interesting.

The students, divided into groups, got the kids together to teach them a couple of prayer songs, alphabets, numbers, rhymes and crafts. Pepping up the kids was the daily dose of stories at the end of each day.

After extensive homework, the students picked up games that improve motor movements of the kids and taught them those by allotting time for everyday schedule.

To introduce a bit of technology, the students used power-point presentations and computer-aided teaching kits. Learning apart, all the 24 kids were provided a glimpse of cultural entertainment through the volunteers’ dance and music shows. Maths was made easy through shortcut methods, English was taught through stories and public speaking was encouraged by providing opportunities.

Assessment

The students assessed the physical, mental and motor developments in the kids through performance tests and improvised on their teaching methods to pace the development. The headmistress of the school S. Gangadevi, Department Head of Home Science P. Thenmozhi and staff C.K. Hemalatha assisted the students in their assessment.

On the final day, provisional teachers and the students celebrated Krishna Jayanthi as a mark of the fruition of the mutual learning experience. Bhajans, stories and dance dramas were a part of the function, which saw the coming together of the teachers and students. Handling the children and honing their basic skills need patience and perseverance, the students said, bidding adieu to the kids.
