On an expedition

ROHINI RAMAKRISHNAN

Big, bright and glossy, these 12 books are a mine of information.

There’s no doubt about it, it’s the large colourful pictures that make the National Geographic Reading Expeditions – Life Sciences series, rock. Big, bright and glossy, the pictures capture the attention of the reader. For example, there are pictures of the porcupine fish, both in the inflated and uninflected state to show the difference. Another plus point is the child-friendly language. Key words are highlighted and explained in the glossary. Reading is interspersed with interesting boxes that are interactive, for example the “Word power” box introduces you to a strange sounding word, and gives you the meaning and etymology especially if it comes from a different language. These boxes stimulate you to think, collect information and work on your own. The “Focus on” box has few facts to whet the appetite of the reader.

Attractive

The 12 titles of the Life Science series have a catchy titles and subtitles –“Diverse defences”, “Devious disguises”. The spectacular spread out or the cool centre page is breathtaking visually while imaginative projects tempt you to take them on. The books end with a “Science notebook” which has important points along with a reading list. Skills of observation are honed and by the time you have finished with the series you are comfortable about systematically collecting data, making tables and graphs. Though some of the topics centre on the U.S., for example in “Ecosystems”, the focus is on the prairies, the format of the book can be taken as a guide and one can identify it with the Indian experience.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC READING EXPEDITION LIFE SCIENCE SERIES: ANIMAL ADAPTATIONS, CLASSIFICATION CLUES, ECOSYSTEMS, LIFE CYCLES, EARTH, SUN, MOON, EXTREME WEATHER, ROCKS AND MINERALS, STARS AND GALAXIES, WONDERS OF WATER, INTRODUCTION TO WEATHER, BONES AND MUSCLES AND RESPIRATION AND CIRCULATION.; Popular Prakashan, Rs. 55 each.
