The legend

Kosi originates as a small stream in the Eastern Himalayas in Nepal. After flowing for nearly 160 miles, it enters the plains of Bihar. The Kosi joins the Ganga in eastern Bihar.

In ancient times, Kosi was known as Kausiki. As per mythology, the river represents Satyavati, the mother of Sage Jamadagni and the elder sister of Sage Visvamitra. After Satyavati passed away, Visvamitra decided to settle on the banks of the Kosi. Th e place where he stayed is called Kausikasrama and is considered sacred. Many other ancient Hindu sages like Rishyasringa also resided on the banks of Kosi.
