Flash floods in Assam

Excess water released from dams in Arunachal Pradesh and Bhutan have caused flash floods in Assam submerging more than 100 villages.

The state has been isolated from the rest of the country due to the heavy flooding.

The Rohmoria embankments on the Brahmputra have been eroded upto 70 metres. Though Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had promised funds to protect the embankments during his visit in January, locals said no work had been done.

Heavy rains have also flooded the Nameri National Park in Sonitpur district. The flood waters damaged paddy crops that were ready for harvest and also cut off the National highway-31 that leads through West Bengal.

The Border Security Force and the National Disaster Response Force have brought motor-boats to rescue stranded people.
