Compassionate chef

PAROMITA PAIN

Ashraya’s philosophy is simple, it’s all about concern…

Ashraya: Very versatile...

For all those who think being nice is passé, Ashraya Ananthanarayanan, is the one to look to. All of seven she has won a prize for compassion. She received the compassionate kid award in Pennsylvania , U.S. and is also being honoured with the Mahatma Gandhi Award from Karunashram, India for her fundraising efforts.

Turtle tale

Here’s her story: “I was in my garden when my friend Hanna came over. I was shocked to hear that a little turtle had strayed into her backyard. Her brother and his friend had decided to keep it as a pet. They didn’t know that it was illegal to have wild animals at home. I went to see the beautiful yellow mud turtle. The turtle was kept in an ice box which was really tiny. I tried talking to the boys about taking the turtle back to the place where they found it but they didn’t listen to me. I contacted PETA to find out what could be done in such a situation. Tori and Ashleigh of PETA were really kind and helped me leave a message for Hanna’s parents highlighting the importance of the turtle’s life and the state laws. They took the turtle back the next morning.”

But this isn’t the end of Ashraya’s adventures. Gandhi with his philosophy of non-violence is her idol and she recently celebrated Gandhi Jayanthi in the U.S. by making compassion tasty. Literally. Inspired by Gandhi’s salt satyagraha, she created ‘Compassion in a dish’ which is essentially a vegan preparation that involves pasta.

Animal crusader and budding chef, Ashraya dons many hats with élan. Soon she will be a published author too. She is working on her book Ray of Hope which will feature ideals of kindness as advocated by the Mahatma and other inspiring stories. Come December she is planning an Indian Classical Dance and Music Concert for mobilising funds for SEVA an organization that helps children with educational needs in India.
