The composition of the Prime Minister’s Global Advisory Council — set up to advise Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on key socio-economic developmental issues — was announced just before the “Pravasi Bharatiya Divas” that began in Chennai on January 7. Among the 20 leaders and economists of Indian origin were Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen, steel magnate L N Mittal and Pepsi chief Indra Nooyi. Others include are Ela Gandhi, Sam Pitroda, Shashi Tharoor, Lord Khalid Hameed, Kishore Mahbubani. According to the PM’s media adviser, the council will “serve as institutionalised dialogue mechanism between the diaspora community and the highest levels of Government”.
