Marine ecosystems

Corals grow by absorbing calcium from seawater to make their hard skeletons harder but this process of calcification has been seeing a rapid decline in the last two decades, says a study of coral samples from the Great Barrier Reef. Coral reefs are a crucial component of marine ecosystems and any setbacks to them could have unknown repercussions. Coral reefs are to oceans what the forests are to land and we know what damage deforestation has caused.
