Summer 2008 : Kids perform on stage.
Talking cars, flying carpets, magical shoes and reigning lions…we’ve loved watching our favourite Disney cartoons on screen and now we can sing with them too. The Unwind Center’s Summer of Love II is back this year with a special workshop for the enthusiastic, wanna-be songsters between the age group of 7 and 14 years titled ‘Disney Classics’.
The reasons for choosing that theme is obvious — their popularity among the kids and so are the soundtracks. At the end of the 12-day workshop you would be singing your way to the stage with classics like “A whole new world” from “Aladdin”, “Can you feel the love tonight?” from “Lion King” and the latest “Life is highway” from “CARS”. Yes, at the end of the workshop, you get to show-off your talent to an audience consisting of your proud parents, doting grandparents, eager friends and curious outsiders, at the Museum Theatre, Egmore.

The one-hour workshop sessions are broken into two, with basic vocal training like breathing, intonation, pitching, and so on followed by the actual song practice.
But do you know what the best part of teaching the kids in this age category is? “It’s their memory,” answers Saroop Oommen of the Unwind Center. “They can learn a song exactly like it is. And moreover, they are very excited to be on stage. They are well prepared and are so gung-ho about the whole thing.”
And this year, there might be an added element of dance and theatre during the performance, says Saroop and “it does help if they have some singing experience before joining the workshop,” he feels, as it’s just a 12-day workshop.
So if you’ve got the passion, enthusiasm and no clue on how to while away the summer, this is a good place to start. So go ahead and hit the high note!
